Engi – forms

— Shikake ouji – choreographed attack/defense blocks with a partner

Keiko – training; practice

Taikai – tournament

Shinpan – judge or referee

Yobidachi – match official who calls the competitors to the shiaijo

Shiai – sparring competition

Aka – red (instead of using the person’s name, we use tasuki (coloured ribbon) to differentiate competitors)

Shiro – white

Senpou – the first competitor on a team

Chuuken – the middle competitor on a team

Taishou – the last competitor/captain on a team

Ippon – a valid point

— EXAMPLE: Men ari – a valid men point was scored

Hansoku – a foul

— Hansoku ikkai – first foul committed

— Hansoku nikkai: ippon ari – second foul committed: a point has been awarded to the other competitor

Enchou – overtime

Shobu ari – the match is over

Hantei – judge’s decision

Hikiwake – a draw
