Parts of the Naginata

  • Naginata – Japanese polearm 
  • Habu – bamboo representation of steel blade 
  • Ha – cutting edge of the habu (convex) 
  • Hassuji – the line made by the ha when cutting; blade alignment
  • Mune – back edge of the habu (concave) 
  • Ebu – oak staff that holds the habu 
  • Kissaki – end of weapon; end of the habu 
  • Ishizuki – butt of the weapon; end of the ebu 
  • Sendanmaki – white tape that attaches ebu to habu 

Equipment

  • Bogu – competition armour 
  • Men – face mask and head padding 
  • Mendare – side flaps of the men 
  • Tenugui – head scarf worn under men 
  • Dou – chest and body protector 
  • Kote – gloves with built-in forearm protectors 
  • Tare – groin and hip protector 
  • Zekken – name tag attached to the tare 
  • Suneate – shin protectors 
  • Keigogi – white uniform 
  • Himo – strings that tie on the bogu or keigogi 
  • Hakama – big pleated trousers 
  • Obi – wide white belt worn under hakama 
  • Tasuki – a red or white ribbon tied around the waist or to the bogu during competition
