History of the Club

UTNC was started by Marija Landekic in the fall of 2007 upon the request of Yamauchi Sachiko-sensei.   Looking to practice with those interested within the University community, she began with only two members, including herself.  Since then the club has grown to include members at both the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as international and exchange students.  Daily practices are also frequented by members of other Toronto Naginata clubs.  All members of the Naginata and University community are welcome at UTNC

2013

We kick-off the year with being lead once again by our capable leader, Tomas Almonte, who grew even more in his leadership skills and Keiko swiftness/power. We had a great turnout for interested members and we were able to have our dojo packed with beginners again (always a happy sight). From them, we welcomed Dan Bouchard, Allen Duong, Angelie Flores, Tim Gadanidis, Jeremy Herrera, Rina Ito (a San-dan from Japan and we couldn’t be more grateful for her presence and input), Risako Kondo, Alex Lau, Marie Tossios, Cleon Yau, and Ryan Zhang.

2012

2012 was a productive and beneficial year for the UofT Naginata Club because it was the year that gave us another outgoing President and Captain, Tomas Almonte, who brought his enthusiasm and passion to the position and to the future of the club. We also were able to welcome Alice, Emma, and Amy Hsueh, Aileen Lin, Lutan Liu, Mary-Kate Proud, Simon Souralaysack, and Anthony Tham to the ranks of the Naginata team. We were also able to host a Raffle that contributed to raising funds for our annual Gasshuku, with items that were sent from Japan by our founder, Marija Landekic.

2011

For the club, the year 2011 was another year of strong change. The current captain Matthew Headland leaves Canada again to take a teaching job in Japan. Before leaving, Matthew places Wesley Law as the clubs captain. The clubs president, Jo-Anne Kuo graduates, and returns to Calgary, ending her time with the UTNC. During this year, Jo-Anne made a very strong contribution to the club by handling most of its admin work. She made her last stand by taking on Misa Ochiai, Justin Chiao, Ricardo Pena, and Wesley Law in on last round of Keiko. Jiayin Sun takes her place as the President of the UTNC. During this year, the club takes in a curious new member: Shreyank Muralindhara, who’s liveliness and outgoing personality made a lot of club events much more fun! Also, Yuki Nishimura, who was able to help us connect even more to the Sensei due to her background and connections. The biggest highlight of this year was 5th World Naginata Championship. The UTNC sent members to participate in the most spectacular Tournament/Party/Gasshuku seen until the next world championship.

2010

2010 was a key turning point for the UTNC. This was the year that Marija Landekic stepped down from club activites, as she would head off to Japan to continue her studies. As Marija was leaving for Japan, Matthew would return from Japan to take her place. By this time, the roles of instructor/captain, and club president became separated, and were assumed by Matthew and Jo-Anne respectively. The club once again gains a number of members from a strong clubs day. Tomas Almonte joins, and later on becomes the equipment manager, an assistant instructor, and social convener. Tomas plays a strong role in keeping the club as lively as it is down the road. Michael Lee also joins the club. Becoming the clubs Webmaster was a fitting role for the computer science student. Michael with his exceptionally strong information gathering skills becomes a key asset to the clubs exec team. Combined with his bartender skills, he adds to many fun and memorable club socials.

2009

By this time, Naginata in Toronto has grown to a size substantial enough to hold a gasshuku! Misa Ochiai, and Young Shim (code name: “The Wonder Twins”) from the JCCC Naginata club enter the UTNC picture. At the time, they were Ikkyu. In the future, they are UTNC members, as well as JCCC instructors. In this year, the club gains significantly in members due to a steller clubs day. Providing demonstrations on club’s day was Kaori Kubo’s last contribution to the club. Many thanks Kaori-Senpai! The club also gains many members whom become future executives, most notably: Jiayin Sun, James Birch, Tiffany Yaw. During this year, Matthew Headland leaves for Japan to continue his training in Japan, and to return later as captain.

2007

Marija Landekic starts the U of T Naginata Club. Marija’s spirit, devotion, attention to detail, and bright smile lay the foundation for the UTNC. Marija handled all club duties at this time, such as: negotiating with the university campus to get practice space, developing the first draft of the clubs constitution, acting as the sole instructor for the club, and most importantly, setting an example for other members. On the clubs first day, Jo-Anne Kuo (future president) stumbles upon the club. Although she may be shy, quiet, and very small, when given a Naginata, she is a deadly force. Her fighting spirit will prove to be cornerstone to the club for years to come. Other members also join such as: Jonathan Levstein, and Adrian Bennett. Both of them with their lively personalities give the club the fun social atmosphere it has today.
